Paragliding from Ham Rong Mountain: A Scenic Way to See Sa Pa from Above

  • 4 min read

In Sa Pa, trekking through mountain villages and visiting scenic viewpoints remain the most popular ways to explore the landscape. In recent years, however, paragliding has emerged as a rewarding alternative for travelers who want to experience the region from a completely different angle.

Ham Rong Mountain has become one of the preferred launch points for paragliding in Sa Pa. Its high elevation and open surroundings make it well suited for flight, while its close proximity to town keeps the journey convenient. Flights here are typically operated by experienced local teams such as Fly Sapa Paragliding, who are familiar with the terrain and the area’s changing weather conditions.

Why Ham Rong Mountain is ideal for paragliding

Ham Rong Mountain rises to around 1,750 meters, making it the highest paragliding take-off point in Vietnam. This elevation allows for a smooth launch and wide, uninterrupted views across the surrounding landscape.

Below the mountain, broad valleys and layered hills help create stable wind conditions. Unlike viewpoints or trekking routes that frame the scenery from a single direction, paragliding opens up the entire region at once. From the launch area, you can already see Sa Pa town, the Hoang Lien Son range, and Muong Hoa Valley, offering a clear sense of the space you are about to fly over.

Reaching the take-off point

The experience usually begins with hotel pick-up. You are taken to the Fly Sapa Paragliding office at Sapa Jade Hill to confirm your booking, complete the necessary paperwork, and store personal belongings. This process is straightforward and does not take long.

From there, a specialized 4WD vehicle transports you to the take-off site on Ham Rong Mountain. Access to this area is restricted and requires special permits, so standard vehicles cannot reach it. The route passes through Ban Hang Da on the southeast side of Ham Rong. Although the take-off point lies near a well-known trekking trail, the road used for paragliding operations is separate and specifically designated.

As the vehicle climbs higher, the journey itself feels like a quiet introduction to the flight. Valleys open beneath the road, terraced fields stack into layers, and on some days, clouds drift past at eye level.

The take-off experience

Tandem paragliding from Ham Rong Mountain is designed to feel controlled and gradual. After a brief safety check and final instructions, the pilot guides the launch.

With a few steady steps forward, the parachute catches the wind and the ground slowly falls away. The sensation is gentle rather than sudden. Within moments, the views expand outward, and Sa Pa town appears smaller below.

Once in the air, the flight reveals terraced fields, rivers, and villages from above. On cloudy days, the experience can feel especially atmospheric, as you may find yourself gliding through drifting clouds before the landscape gradually opens up beneath you. The 360-degree perspective allows you to look freely in every direction, giving a clear sense of the scale and shape of the valleys. Flight duration depends on wind and weather conditions, but the overall experience feels calm and unhurried.

Landing in Ta Van Valley

The flight ends in Ta Van village, on the eastern side of the river. The landing area is a wide, open grass field with no obstacles, making it a safe and comfortable place to touch down.

The site is well equipped, with shaded areas, seating, restrooms, electricity, and plenty of space for friends or family to watch and take photos. It also serves as a gathering point for the paramotor flight team operating in the area.

Compared to take-off, landing feels relaxed and controlled. Afterward, there is time to rest, review photos or videos from the flight, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the valley.
